Was it the Eclipse that Caused my Problem?

I was shocked! The day of the eclipse I had such a great time at the big Eclipse Brunch I spent the afternoon sleeping it off!

So the next day started like any other day. It got hot in the morning and there was no eclipse. My afternoon was a lazy one. I had my usual kibble for dinner and spent some time in the back yard. And that's when it happened...

All of a sudden I felt a sharp pain in my paw. I didn't know what it was. I licked it and nothing changed. My paw really hurt. I tucked it up under me and slowly limped over to the deck where my owner was enjoying the shade and flowers.

I collapsed on the mat right by the door. She jumped up and wanted to see what was wrong. I was afraid it would hurt so tucked my paw under me. She made me show it to her and she went over the paw and between the pads and didn't find a thing. I kept licking it. I just wanted the pain to go away.

So she let me inside and I limped over to the darkness of the front door entry way and collapsed in the corner.... trying to hide so no one would get the idea that I needed to go to the vet. And my paw still hurt.

I didn't want anyone to touch it. I hurt!

My owner checked everything and then brought over my water so I wouldn't get dehydrated. I wanted nothing to do with walking or even standing.

She was worried, I could tell. She rummaged through the shelves of the pantry and found some of Francesca's medicine from when her leg hurt her (it was a sprain). So she gave me a dose of some sweet tasting anti-inflamatory/pain medicine and I pulled away even more. I was scared she'd give me something worse... like a pill!

And then she left me alone. I guess she figured I wasn't going to move so she brought my bed over. When she was out of sight, I limped over and plopped on my cushy bed. Once I plopped, I didn't move much all night. I guess I turned around a couple of times. but I didn't go anywhere.

I spent the whole night on my bed by the door.

So I woke up and wondered why my paw didn't hurt. I was afraid to move from my bed thinking it would start hurting to I stayed there. When I heard breakfast being made in the kitchen, I forgot all about my paw and stood up. I didn't hurt! I carefully made my way over to the place where I get my breakfast and I was doing fine. I had breakfast and went to lay down again. Francesca asks for breakfast really early so we often go back to bed after we eat.

I am mostly glad I didn't have to go to the pokey, proddy vet!

Later on, I walked around slowly and felt just fine. I went outside and felt just fine. I may have rested more than usual but by evening I was totally just fine. I wonder if the eclipse caused this because I don't know what happened!

Trips to the Vet: Tricks and Treats

Francesca and I have something to say. We feel tricked. We want to tell you what a visit to the Vet is like from the dog's perspective. So listen up! (I'm a little miffed to say the least!).

It was a lazy day.

Cinnamon: Yesterday I had a great day lazing around. It was warm outside and I didn't feel a whole lot like playing. Around 1:30 my owner got out my leash. I was really excited. It had to be good. Was it the dog park? A volksmarch? A trip to the river? I jumped in the car in anticipation.

We drove down the street and pulled into.... the Vet's office! Oh no!

I went in reluctantly and was greeted by our friends. I knew I needed a Bordatella booster but didn't know what else I was in store for! I got weighed. 53 pounds.... no weight loss for sure. And that was pretty embarrassing.

And then they dragged me into the "torture room," and lifted me onto the table. I was going to have my nails cut. I hate that! And two of the nails hurt when they cut them. Yeah, I have many more but I don't like to get hurt!

So finally it was over and something good happened. I got a treat from the jar and then, out of the back room, they found a VERY SPECIAL TREAT. I loved it. In fact, they gave me the whole bag to take home. But I wasn't fooled. I'LL NOT FORGET THE PAIN IN THE TORTURE ROOM! I have a memory, you know!

Francesca: Yesterday Cinnamon went to the Vet's office. I laughed as she drove away... my sadistic little laugh.

And when she came home, she brought some scrumptious treats. I was glad she went because it was all good for me!

Well, so I thought. Now today, about 1:30 p.m. my owner got MY leash and I got excited. Cinnamon just sat on the couch and smirked. She knew what was going to happen.

I jumped in the car and off we went.... to the VET! NOT ME TOO! I wasn't thrilled when I got there and really didn't want to go inside. I sniffed around the room ignoring the ladies who were trying to be nice to me. In fact, one of them wanted to pet me and I wasn't a bit thrilled. I TRUST NO ONE AT THE VET'S OFFICE.

So next, I was weighed.... a svelte 50 pounds - in comparison with Cinnamon's 53 chubby pounds. :)

Then they grabbed me. First they took my temperature and then stuck some ucky stuff in my mouth. Next was the WORST! They held my head and the Vet Tech stuck a HUGE needle into the back of my neck.... a HUGE needle! I was NOT PLEASED.

So finally it was over and it was treat time. I got some from the jar but then asked for a bag of the good stuff. And they gave me one!

Cinnamon: When Francesca got home we opened her bag of treats and enjoyed some. I heard that you can get these new treats at Freddie's and so we will be shopping there soon!

Francesca: I had such a rough time at the Vet's office I just plopped in the garden and refused to move. I'm not going to be tricked so easily next time!

Just don't bother me!

When I was at the shelter, I’d see dogs come in itching and looking pretty miserable. They were what we dogs call, flea ridden! Now things are probably different with your pets who have their forever home. They wouldn’t be like that. Or would they?

If you see a flea or two on your dog, keep in mind that what you see is only the tip of the iceberg. What you don’t see is the toughest part of the problem. You can pick off and kill those visible adult fleas. But by the time you see fleas on your dog, it’s likely you also have an infestation of the immature stages in your home. That’s what happened to the lady at the vet. I think she was more miserable than her dog!

So as an example, you might find ten fleas on your scratchy dog but there could be 40 or more in hiding. So then (get scared here!) with 40 fleas you can expect about 80 pupae, 280 larvae and 400 flea eggs hiding in your carpet, bedding, furniture and even between your floor boards.

So if you get good flea control started you’ll still continue to see fleas for several months as these life stages mature.

So now, I know you’re scared! So what to do? If you see one or two fleas on your dog, it’s not too late. Visit your veterinarian and see if you can start your dog on BRAVECTO®, the flea prevention I told you about in my last article. On Baths: How to Bathe a Dog and Why Cinnamon got a Bath

I, Cinnamon, have lucked out. While Francesca has had numerous baths because she likes to get dirty when she’s playing, I haven’t had to go near the dreaded bathtub.

Here’s how I do it:
1. I don’t roll in stuff at the dog park
2. I avoid mud.
3. I don’t play rough with other dogs.
4. I make sure Francesca is much dirtier than I am so she is the one who gets the bath!

But my luck ran out this week when my owner noticed that my skin was getting flaky. I guess you’d say I have dandruff. She thought, since I had not had a bath in many months, that a good scrubbing would help my skin.

 

Here I am, still wet, waiting to go outside and run around.
You can see my fur is shinier now.
You can also see that I am giving my owner the Stink Eye!

So I heard the water running and thought about making my escape. But my owner put the leash on me and, after that, I just calmly walked into the bathroom and jumped into the tub. No need to struggle… it just gets me frustrated.

So here’s the right way to bathe a dog (I looked it up on the Internet):

1.     Brush your dog first to get the loose stuff out and remove any matted hair (that’s for long haired dogs).

2.     Either put cotton balls in your dogs ears to keep the water out or make sure you don’t get your dog’s head wet.

3.     Prepare the bath with warm water. Not hot water. Not cold water.

4.     Use dog shampoo, scrub your dog’s skin and fur (my favorite part) and rinse it out well, really well.

5.     Give your dog a treat afterwards for enduring the bath.

6.     Short haired dogs can be towel dried or air dried on a warm day in the sun. Long haired dogs can benefit from a hair dryer unless it scares them too much.

So I had my bath and got towel dried. I then ran around the yard like crazy which helped me air dry. I spent the rest of the day lazing in the sun.

So did it get rid of my dandruff? I think it might have. I still see some, but I feel better and my fur is much shinier!

Oh no! It's a flea!

Country club shenanigans lead to a trip to the vet

Hi, it's me Francesca. I just got home yesterday from the Doggie Country Club where Cinnamon and I stay when our owner goes out of town. It's a great place where I can play, roll in the dirt and get fed on time. What more could a dog want?

Here it is... our Country Club.

Well, I have a tale to tell. The day before we went home I was moving toward Cinnamon and she saw me out of the corner of her eye. All of a sudden she whirled around snarling. I don't know what happened but she thought I was going to steal something from her. Her teeth were bared and she growled at me. I just stood there in awe. Come to find out that was a big mistake. She knashed her teeth and lunged toward me. And, she caught a piece of my face in her huge canine tooth.

It was right under my eye. Her bite tore a little hole in my face. The lady at the Country Club called to us... "Break it up girls... stop that right now!"  And Cinnamon stopped.

Nobody looked at my injury. Nobody seemed to see that, under the broken skin it was all red and ugly. I slinked off to bed to soothe myself.

The next day our owner arrived to pick us up. Cinnamon trotted out like nothing ever happened. I sniffed around the reception area hoping to find some loose kibble so no one noticed my swollen sore.

That night we had dinner, played in the yard and were happy to be home. I was lying on the couch and my owner looked at me. "What happened Francesca? Poor girl," she said. She couldn't really tell how bad the injury was but it was puffy. She called the Country Club and asked if they had seen it. They said no.

This is my hurt face before the skin fell off. It's ugly.

So that brings us to today. This morning the skin fell off the sore and everyone could see that it was red and puffy. So off to the vet we went. I was excited and trotted right in. I noticed they had some gorgeous new treat jars! They were stainless steel with pet designs on them. The nice ladies got me a treat right away!

Then it was time to see the doctor. I never like to see the doctor. He looked at my eye and pressed it. "Hmmmm," he said. Turns out he suspected a little infection had started. He prescribed antibiotics for me. Now I don't mind medicine because I always get my medicine wrapped in something DELICIOUS!

This afternoon I laid in the yard in the sun with my sore face turned upwards. I think it helps the healing. I know I feel better.

Cinnamon's Diet Success Story

See, aren't my paws delicate and pretty?

Remember last year when I had to go on a diet. I was weighing more than Francesca. She is bigger than I am. In fact she has such huge paws that I think they must weigh a pound each. I, on the other hand, am more fine-boned and petite.

Well, that is except for my stomach. So last year I went on a diet to try and get below the 52 pounds that I weighed. I cut out some of my treats and always ate less than Francesca. What happened? I GAINED WEIGHT! I gained weight and Francesca lost weight.

So every meal time I groaned. I just knew I would be shorted food. Francesca got the extra food that wasn't served to me and she didn't gain weight. Months went by and I had just about given up.

So today, we went to the Veterinarian for my check up and 3 year rabies shot. I don't like it there. Well, I like the Vet's assistant but I don't like him because he pokes, prods and sticks me with needles!

So of course the first thing that we did was head for the dreaded scales. Oh No! I got on the scales and obediently sat down. I grimaced. I didn't want to hear how much I weighed. And.... my weight was.... (drum roll, please) 50.8 pounds! I LOST WEIGHT! I lost over a pound!

So then it was time for the dreaded exam. I winced some more. But what the doctor said, was pretty encouraging. I had lost weight, yes... but my heart rate was that of an athlete. And I was very healthy. I, Cinnamon, wasn't looking like an old dog at all.

So now I don't complain about the diet and I don't complain about exercise. I'm a healthy coonhound and I'm a success!

I was so happy with myself I decided to sleep on the new couch cover on the couch all night. What a treat! Francesca had to sleep alone!

How Do You Know Your Dog has Tapeworms? And What do You Do?

I know Francesca has cooties.
But this is even WORSE!

What? Tapeworms in MY family? Tapeworms in dogs are not as rare as you might think. However, their life cycle involves fleas and that is why I am so surprised. Both Francesca and I are on systemic flea medication… one pill every 12 weeks.

Warning: This is a graphic discussion of dog poop and tapeworms which may offend some humans.

So this morning my owner became alarmed when she saw a small grain of a rice type organism in Francesca’s poop. I have to say that Francesca had been annoying me a lot lately by licking her behind. Now I know that is another symptom of tapeworms.

I read on the Internet that when you tell your veterinarian there's rice in your dog’s poop, a diagnosis of tapeworm is likely.  They say that Tapeworm is pretty common and that it is a parasite carried by fleas. (We don’t have fleas!).

So here’s what they say about a dog with tapeworms. The dog shed tapeworm segments in her feces. You may find segments on his buttocks and bed.  (YUCK!) The segments are initially white with a rice-like appearance. As the tapeworm segment dries, the color changes to gold. Your dog may frequently lick his anus or scoot his butt across the carpet to relieve irritation caused by tapeworms. Most dogs do not have other symptoms, but acting sick or irritable with mild diarrhea is possible.  Here’s more information.

A process of several steps must take place before your dog is infected. The feces of an infected dog have tapeworm segments that have eggs in them. Flea larvae in the environment eat the eggs. Later they become adult fleas that your dog might ingest. And that is how the tapeworm gets started in your dog’s tummy.

I was appalled that Francesca had this horrible parasite. And, of course, I was really worried that I would “catch it.” So, although I laughed to my self when Francesca had to go to the vet, I wanted some advice for ME too!

When they got back they had two medicine vials. One was for me (2 pills) and one was for Francesca (one pill). Turns out that the medication is prescribed by weight. And I am a bit heavier (it’s all muscle) than Francesca. The vet said that even if Francesca is on flea medication, she may have picked up the parasite when she was running loose on the roads in Yamhill county.

So we got the pills with our breakfast and I feel much better psychologically. I know now that if I had any tapeworms inside me, they will be DEAD, DEAD, DEAD.

So that’s over… one dose and it’s done.
